Complete genome sequence of the methanogenic neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MF(T.).

2014

The neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MFT (DSM1535), a hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaeon, was isolated from a domestic sewage sludge digestor in Urbana (IL, USA). Here, the complete genome sequence of the methanogen is reported. The genome is 2,478,074 bp in size, featuring a GC content of 41.23%. M. formicicum MFT encodes several genes predicted to be involved in adaptation to abiotic stress such as high osmolarity. The strain MFT is of biotechnological importance since M. formicicum strains are often found in production-scale biogas plants and it is suggested as a starter culture for the anaerobic biomethanation process. Modelling and assessing public health policies to counteract Italian measles outbreaks

2021

This study aims to understand, through explanatory research, the key factors that led to the 2017 measles outbreak in Italy, the causes of the low level of immunisation and the causes of possible cyclical phenomena of measles epidemics. This topic's comprehension has required a holistic approach, merging epidemiological aspects, socioeconomic aspects (including the evolution of mistrust in vaccinations, infodemy and fake news) and health law constraints. A specific SIR System Dynamics (SD) model was built to reproduce the relevant cause-and-effect relationships between social interactions, the public institutions behaviour and the measles outbreaks. SD results permit the assessment of the h…

'REOFUT' as an Observation Tool for Tactical Analysis on Offensive Performance in Soccer: Mixed Method Perspective

2019

Performance analysis in complex sports like soccer requires the study of the influence of the interaction between both teams during the game on final performance. The mixed methods approach involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data for the same purpose and within the framework of the same study. To build certain observation tools, mixed methods are necessary in order to take advantage of integration between qualitative and quantitative elements. The aim of this study was to develop a new no standard observation tool to analyze soccer offensive performance considering not only the observed team but also some aspects of the opponent behavior, a…

A Cooperative Coevolution Framework for Parallel Learning to Rank

2015

We propose CCRank, the first parallel framework for learning to rank based on evolutionary algorithms (EA), aiming to significantly improve learning efficiency while maintaining accuracy. CCRank is based on cooperative coevolution (CC), a divide-and-conquer framework that has demonstrated high promise in function optimization for problems with large search space and complex structures. Moreover, CC naturally allows parallelization of sub-solutions to the decomposed sub-problems, which can substantially boost learning efficiency. With CCRank, we investigate parallel CC in the context of learning to rank. We implement CCRank with three EA-based learning to rank algorithms for demonstration. E…

Shared and personal learning spaces: Challenges for pedagogical design

2012

Abstract The development of new tools for collaboration, such as social software, plays a crucial role in leisure time and work activities. The aim of this article is to summarize the research in the field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). This is done particularly from the perspective of the blurred line between individual (personal) and group-level (shared) learning that the use of the new tools has forced us to re-think. First, individual and group-level perspectives to learning are discussed to make sense of the major notions of how learning is understood in CSCL research. Second, based on this theoretical grounding, it will be further elaborated what this means to th…
